Why Your WiFi Is Slow Upstairs and How to Fix It

If you've ever tried to stream a video or join a video call from your bedroom upstairs only to watch the loading circle spin endlessly, you're not alone. Slow WiFi on upper floors is one of the most common home internet complaints in the US. The good news is that it's usually fixable — once you understand what's actually causing it.

The Real Reason Your WiFi Signal Weakens Upstairs

Your WiFi router sends out wireless signals in all directions, similar to a light bulb spreading light around a room. The further you move from that source, the weaker the signal becomes. Add walls, floors, and ceilings between your device and the router, and the signal degrades even faster.

Distance and Physical Barriers

Most routers are placed on the first floor — often in a living room, home office, or near the front door where the cable connection enters the house. That placement means the signal has to travel vertically through at least one floor and ceiling before reaching your upstairs devices. Concrete, drywall, and especially metal structures absorb and scatter wireless signals significantly.

Router Placement Mistakes

One of the biggest culprits is simply where the router sits. If it's on the floor, tucked behind furniture, or placed inside a cabinet, you're already losing signal before it even starts its journey upstairs. Routers are designed to broadcast signals outward and slightly downward, not upward. If your main living space is on the first floor, a router placed low in a corner won't push a strong signal to the second floor.

Router Age and Technology

Older routers using older WiFi standards like 802.11n (WiFi 4) just don't have the range or speed of newer models running WiFi 5 or WiFi 6. If your router is more than five or six years old, it may simply lack the hardware to deliver consistent speeds throughout a multi-floor home.

Network Congestion

If multiple people in your home are streaming, gaming, or on video calls at the same time, your router is splitting its bandwidth across all those devices. Upstairs devices, already working with a weaker signal, get hit hardest when the network is congested.


How to Fix Slow WiFi Upstairs

1. Reposition Your Router

Start with the simplest fix. Move your router to a more central location in your home — ideally somewhere elevated, like a shelf or a table on the main floor. The goal is to reduce the distance and number of barriers between the router and your upstairs rooms.

If your router sits on the first floor near the back of the house and your bedroom is on the second floor toward the front, you're asking the signal to travel both vertically and horizontally through multiple walls. Centering the router reduces that total distance.

2. Use a WiFi Extender or Repeater

A WiFi extender picks up your existing signal and rebroadcasts it, effectively stretching your network's reach. You plug it in somewhere between your router and the area with poor coverage — in this case, somewhere on the staircase or landing between floors.

The downside is that extenders often cut available bandwidth in half since they're receiving and transmitting on the same channel. They also typically create a separate network name, which means your devices may not switch to the stronger signal automatically.

3. Switch to a Mesh WiFi System

A mesh network is the most effective solution for multi-floor homes. Instead of one router trying to cover everything, a mesh system uses multiple nodes placed throughout your home that all work together as a single network. Your devices connect to whichever node is closest and strongest, without any manual switching on your end.

Brands like Eero, Google Nest WiFi, and Orbi by Netgear offer solid mesh systems at different price points. For a two-story home, two nodes are usually enough. Larger homes may need three.

4. Use a Powerline Adapter Kit

If running ethernet cables through your walls isn't realistic, powerline adapters are a clever alternative. These devices use your home's existing electrical wiring to carry internet data. You plug one adapter into an outlet near your router and connect it with an ethernet cable, then plug a second adapter into an outlet upstairs.
