Your Range Hood is Loud but Smoke Lingers—Here's Why
You turn on the range hood, it roars to life, and then... nothing really happens. Smoke and cooking odors still hang in your kitchen while the fan runs at full volume. This is one of the most frustrating appliance problems I see in homes, and the good news is that it's usually fixable without replacing the unit.
The disconnect between noise level and actual performance tells us something important: the fan motor is working, but the airflow isn't getting where it needs to go. We're looking at a ventilation system problem, not a motor problem.
The Most Common Culprit: Ductwork Blockage
In many homes, we see range hoods that sound powerful but don't move air effectively, and nine times out of ten it's a blocked duct. Over months or years, grease buildup accumulates inside the ducting—especially in the first few feet leaving the hood and in any horizontal sections. This buildup acts like a dam, forcing the motor to work harder (making more noise) while restricting the actual volume of air that escapes.
I had a customer last month whose range hood was so loud her family avoided cooking. When I opened up her ductwork, I found nearly an inch of grease coating the inside of the duct. After cleaning it out, the same motor moved three times the air at half the noise level. She couldn't believe the difference.
Grease accumulation happens faster if you cook frequently, fry foods, or don't clean the hood filters regularly. The filters catch some particles, but when they're clogged, air pressure backs up and forces grease into the ductwork itself.
Check These Parts Before You Call a Technician
Filters First: Start by removing and inspecting your range hood filters. If they're dark, greasy, or visibly clogged, they're your first problem. Many filters can be washed in hot soapy water or replaced entirely. A clogged filter forces the motor to work harder and reduces suction significantly. Replace or clean them monthly if you cook regularly.
The Damper Flapper: Most range hoods have a damper—a one-way flap at the end of the duct that lets air out but prevents outside air from coming back in. If this gets stuck closed or is blocked by debris, airflow stops completely while the motor still runs loud. It's a simple fix if you can access your ductwork from the attic or exterior.
Duct Sizing and Route: Sometimes the problem is structural. If your ductwork is undersized for your hood's CFM (cubic feet per minute) rating, or if it's routed with too many bends, you'll get noise and poor performance. A 6-inch duct is standard, but if yours is 5-inch or smaller, or if it has multiple 90-degree turns, airflow restriction is built in. Smooth, straight runs work best.
When It's Not the Ducts
If your filters are clean and you can see your ductwork is clear, the issue might be inside the hood itself. The blower wheel can accumulate grease and debris, throwing it off balance and reducing efficiency. This creates noise without performance. The motor housing can also collect grease film that insulates the motor, making it run hot and loud.
In some cases, you're dealing with a recirculating hood instead of a vented one. These hoods pull air through filters and return it to the kitchen rather than venting outside. They're quieter by design but much less effective at removing smoke and odors. If your hood is recirculating and barely removes smoke, it's doing what it was designed to do—it's just not the right solution for your cooking style.
Real Solutions That Work
Start with the simplest fixes: clean or replace filters, inspect and clear your damper, and look for visible grease buildup in accessible ductwork. If you have a similar appliance issue with your dishwasher or other kitchen equipment, often the root cause is similar—restricted airflow or circulation.
If those don't help, you'll likely need professional ductwork cleaning. A technician can use compressed air and specialized brushes to clear grease from inside the ducts, and can inspect the damper, duct sealing, and connections. It's usually a two-hour job and costs far less than replacing the hood.
Check your hood's CFM rating (usually on a label inside), and make sure your ductwork can handle it. If you're renovating or upgrading, choosing a hood with realistic CFM for your space, and running a properly sized, smooth duct to the outside, prevents these problems from starting.

Here's what to do this week: (1) Remove and clean or replace your range hood filters—they should be washable or replaced monthly with regular cooking. (2) Feel the air coming out of your outside vent or hood exterior damper—it should be strong and steady; if it's weak or blocked, investigate the ductwork.
