Why Your Washer Keeps Adding Time to the Cycle

You've got a load running, the cycle says 28 minutes, and suddenly it jumps to 45. Then it adds another 10. By the time your washer finally stops, you've lost an hour of your day. The frustrating thing is that modern washers are designed to add time for a reason, but when it's happening constantly, something's typically off.

Load Sensing Technology Gone Wrong

Most newer washers have automatic load sensing. The machine detects how much weight is in the drum and adjusts water levels and cycle time accordingly. This is actually smart engineering—it saves water and energy when you're running a small load. But in many homes, we see this feature misbehaving when the weight sensor malfunctions or gets confused by how items are distributed in the drum.

Here's what happens: Your washer thinks you've loaded it heavier than you actually did. Maybe the clothes bunched up on one side, or detergent residue threw off the sensor reading. Too much detergent is sneakier than you'd think. Modern HE washers use very little water, so excess suds don't rinse out completely. When the washer detects too much foam, it automatically adds rinse cycles—and time—to clear it. Many people don't realize that "high-efficiency" detergent isn't just marketing. Using regular detergent in an HE machine almost guarantees extended cycles and poor rinsing.

Temperature and Flow Rate Problems

Similarly, if water isn't entering the drum fast enough overall, sensors detect the delay and add time hoping more water will arrive. Clogged inlet screens are the most common culprit here, and they're something you can actually clean yourself.

If you've checked detergent type, cleaned inlet screens, and redistributed your loads without improvement, you're looking at a sensor or valve issue that needs professional diagnosis. Pressure switches, weight sensors, and water inlet valves aren't typically DIY repairs—they require testing equipment and replacement parts specific to your model.

The good news: most of these repairs are straightforward for a technician and shouldn't cost a fortune. Catching the problem early prevents water waste and keeps your laundry routine actually efficient.

Start here: Switch to HE detergent if you have an HE washer (high-efficiency models use less water). Check that inlet hoses aren't kinked and clean the small screens where hoses connect to the washer. Look inside the drum for tangled or bunched fabrics before running a cycle. If time still keeps adding, check your water heater—very slow hot water flow can trigger extended cycles. If none of these help, call a technician to check the pressure switch and water inlet valves.
