When Your Fridge Won't Quit Running

A refrigerator is supposed to cycle on and off throughout the day. You hear it kick on, run for a while, then quiet down. That's normal. But if yours has been humming away nonstop for hours — or you've started noticing a spike in your electric bill without explanation — something is off. A fridge that runs continuously isn't just annoying. It's working harder than it should, wearing out its compressor faster, and costing you real money every month.

The good news is that most of the causes behind this problem are findable and fixable without immediately calling for a replacement. Let's walk through what's actually going on.

Dirty Condenser Coils Are the Most Common Culprit

This is the one people overlook more than any other. The condenser coils on your refrigerator release heat from the system. When they're caked in dust, pet hair, and kitchen grease — which happens faster than most people expect — the fridge can't shed heat efficiently. So it keeps running, trying to reach a temperature it can never quite get to.

In many homes, we see coils that haven't been cleaned in three or four years. On some models, they're located underneath the unit behind a toe grille. On others, they run along the back. Either way, a vacuum with a brush attachment and a coil cleaning brush (about $8 at any hardware store) can make a dramatic difference. After a good cleaning, some fridges noticeably quiet down within the hour.

How Often Should You Clean Them?

At minimum, once a year. If you have pets that shed heavily, every six months is a smarter schedule. It's one of those quick maintenance tasks that most people never think about until there's a problem.

A Worn Door Gasket Is Letting Cold Air Escape

The rubber seal around your refrigerator door — called the gasket — keeps cold air in and warm air out. When it starts to crack, warp, or simply lose its grip, the fridge has to run constantly to compensate for the cold it's losing.

Here's a quick field test: close the door on a dollar bill. If you can pull the bill out without any resistance, the seal isn't doing its job. We've seen homes where a torn gasket was running up an extra $15 to $25 per month in electricity. A replacement gasket for most refrigerator models costs between $20 and $60 and installs without any special tools.

The Refrigerator Is Placed in a Hot Spot

Location matters more than people realize. A refrigerator sitting directly next to a stove, in a sun-facing corner, or in a garage that heats up in summer has to work significantly harder to maintain its internal temperature. If your fridge recently started running constantly and nothing else changed, think about whether the room got hotter — a new season, a nearby appliance running more often, or a vent blowing warm air nearby.

Leaving at least two inches of clearance on the sides and top of the unit also helps with ventilation. A fridge pushed flush against a cabinet wall is essentially trapping its own heat.

Low Refrigerant or a Failing Compressor

If you've cleaned the coils, checked the gaskets, and ruled out environmental factors and the fridge still won't stop running, you may be dealing with a refrigerant leak or a compressor that's beginning to fail. These are less common in newer units but show up regularly in appliances that are ten years old or older.
