Your AC Is Running, So Why Does the Air Still Feel Sticky?
You crank the air conditioning, the temperature drops, but the air still feels heavy and damp. Your shirt sticks to your back, the windows fog slightly, and it just doesn't feel comfortable. This is one of the most common complaints we hear from homeowners, and the frustrating part is that the AC is technically working. The problem isn't always about cooling — it's about moisture control, and those are two very different things.
How Your AC Is Supposed to Handle Humidity
A central air conditioner does two jobs at once: it lowers the temperature and removes moisture from the air. As warm air passes over the cold evaporator coil, water vapor condenses on the coil's surface and drains away. That's why you see a condensate drain line running out of your air handler. When this process works correctly, you get cool, dry air. When something disrupts it, you get cool but still-humid air — which honestly can feel just as uncomfortable as heat.
The Oversized AC Problem Nobody Talks About Enough
One of the most overlooked causes is an AC unit that's too large for your home. It sounds counterintuitive — bigger should be better, right? But an oversized system cools the space so quickly that it shuts off before it's had enough time to pull moisture out of the air. This is called short cycling, and it's extremely common in homes where a contractor replaced the system without doing a proper load calculation.
In many homes, we see units that were upsized "just to be safe" — and the result is a house that hits 72°F in ten minutes but sits at 65% relative humidity all day. Ideally, indoor humidity should stay between 40% and 50%. Anything above 55% and you'll start to feel it, and above 60% you're looking at potential mold growth and dust mite problems.
What a Real Short-Cycling Situation Looks Like
A homeowner in a 1,400 square foot ranch-style house had a 4-ton AC installed when a 2-ton system was appropriate. The unit would run for five or six minutes, cool the house quickly, then shut off. The dehumidification process needs at least 10 to 15 minutes of continuous run time to be effective. That system never got there. The house stayed at 68% humidity all summer, and the family was running box fans and still feeling uncomfortable.

Dirty Evaporator Coils
When the evaporator coil is coated in dust or grime, it can't transfer heat efficiently. That means less condensation happens on the surface, and less moisture gets removed. Low Refrigerant
If your system is low on refrigerant, the coil temperature rises, which reduces its ability to condense moisture from the air. You might notice the system blowing air that's cool but not cold, combined with that sticky feeling. Low refrigerant always means a leak somewhere — it doesn't just evaporate on its own — so this needs a technician, not a DIY fix.
