It sounds counterintuitive — your air conditioner is supposed to produce cold air, so why is ice forming on it a problem? The Most Common Cause: Restricted Airflow
In most cases, when we find a frozen AC unit, the first thing we check is the air filter. A clogged filter chokes off airflow across the evaporator coil. Without enough warm air moving over it, the coil gets too cold and moisture in the air freezes right onto it. It sounds simple, and honestly, it is — but it accounts for a huge percentage of service calls we see every summer.
One homeowner called us last July convinced their refrigerant was leaking. The system had barely any airflow coming through the vents, and the coil was buried in ice. Other Airflow Issues People Overlook
It's not always the filter. Closed or blocked supply vents are another common culprit. Low Refrigerant Is Sneaky
