A washing machine that stops spinning can throw off your entire laundry routine and leave you with soaking wet clothes and no clear answers. Before you call a repair service or start shopping for a new appliance, there are several things you can check and fix yourself. Many spinning problems come down to simple causes that don't require professional tools or technical expertise. This guide walks you through the most likely reasons your washer isn't spinning and what you can do about each one.
Check the Load First
One of the most overlooked causes of a washer not spinning is an unbalanced or overloaded load. Modern washing machines have sensors that detect when the drum is too heavy or unevenly distributed. When that happens, the machine will stop the spin cycle to protect itself from damage.
Open the lid or door and rearrange the clothes so they are spread evenly around the drum. If you have a large, heavy item like a comforter or a pair of jeans, try washing it with a few other items to balance the load. Also remove any excess clothing if the machine looks stuffed. After redistributing, restart the spin cycle and see if that resolves the issue.
Inspect the Lid Switch or Door Latch
Top-loading washers have a lid switch that must be engaged before the machine will spin. If this small plastic component breaks or becomes misaligned, the washer thinks the lid is open and refuses to proceed with the spin cycle.
Press the lid down firmly and listen for a clicking sound. If you hear nothing or the click feels loose, the lid switch may be faulty. You can test it with a multimeter if you are comfortable with basic electronics, or you can visually inspect it for obvious damage. Replacement lid switches are inexpensive and available at most appliance parts stores.
Front-loading washers have a door latch that works similarly. If the door is not fully secured, the machine will not spin. Check that the latch is clean, properly aligned, and not cracked or broken.
Look at the Drain Hose and Pump Filter
A washer cannot complete the spin cycle if it is unable to drain properly. If water is sitting in the drum at the end of a cycle, a clogged drain hose or pump filter is often the reason.
Start by checking the drain hose at the back of the machine. It should not be kinked, bent sharply, or pushed too far down into the standpipe. The hose end should be about six to eight inches inside the pipe, not sealed in tightly, which can cause siphoning problems.
Next, locate the pump filter. On most front-loading machines, it is behind a small panel at the bottom front of the unit. Place a towel and a shallow pan nearby before opening it because trapped water will spill out. Unscrew the cap slowly and let the water drain, then remove any lint, coins, hair ties, or other debris that has built up inside. A clean filter dramatically improves drainage and spinning performance.
Examine the Drive Belt
If your washer makes a humming sound but the drum does not move, a worn or broken drive belt could be the cause. The drive belt connects the motor to the drum and allows it to spin at high speed. Over time, belts stretch, fray, or snap entirely.
To check the belt, you will need to remove the back panel or lower front panel depending on the model. Disconnect the power before doing this. Look at the belt visually. If it is loose, cracked, or missing, it needs to be replaced. Drive belts are affordable parts and replacement is manageable for someone comfortable with basic appliance repair.
Motor Coupling and Carbon Brushes
On some top-loading direct-drive washers, particularly older Whirlpool and Maytag models, a plastic motor coupling connects the motor to the transmission. This part is designed to break under stress to protect the motor. If yours is broken, the drum will not agitate or spin.
