When Your Fridge Stops Cooling, Don't Panic Yet
A warm refrigerator is one of those problems that feels urgent the moment you notice it — especially when you've got a full load of groceries sitting inside. Before you assume the worst and start pricing out a new unit, take a breath. In most cases, a refrigerator that's not cooling properly has a fixable cause, and some of them you can resolve yourself without calling a technician at all.
That said, knowing what to look for makes all the difference. Let's walk through the most common reasons this happens and what you should actually do about each one.
Start With the Obvious Stuff (People Skip This)
It sounds basic, but you'd be surprised how often a service call comes down to a dirty condenser coil or a blocked vent. In many homes, we see refrigerators pushed tight against the wall with barely an inch of clearance, and the condenser coils — usually located underneath or along the back — caked in dust and pet hair. Those coils are responsible for releasing heat. When they're blocked, the refrigerator works harder, runs hotter, and eventually loses its ability to maintain temperature.
Pull the unit out, vacuum the coils with a brush attachment, and make sure there's at least two inches of clearance on all sides. Do this every six months if you have pets. It's genuinely one of the most overlooked maintenance tasks in the kitchen.
Check the Door Seals
A worn or torn door gasket is another sneaky culprit. Close the door on a dollar bill — if you can pull it out without any resistance, the seal isn't doing its job. Cold air leaks out constantly, the compressor runs nonstop trying to compensate, and temperatures creep up. Replacing a gasket is a low-cost fix you can usually handle yourself with a part ordered from the manufacturer.
The Evaporator Fan and Frost Buildup
Here's a scenario that comes up often: a customer notices their freezer still seems cold, but the refrigerator section is warm. This is a classic sign of an evaporator fan problem or frost buildup blocking airflow. The refrigerator and freezer share the same cooling system — the evaporator coils sit in the freezer, and a fan pushes that cold air into the refrigerator compartment. If that fan is broken or ice has built up around the coils, the cold air simply doesn't make it through.
You can test this by listening for the fan running when you open the freezer door (press the door switch manually to keep the fan running). No sound? The fan motor may need replacing. If you see a wall of frost on the back panel of your freezer, a manual defrost cycle — unplugging the unit for 24 to 48 hours with the doors open — often resolves it. If the frost returns within a week or two, the defrost thermostat or heater is likely failing.
When It's the Compressor or Refrigerant
If you've checked everything above and the fridge still isn't cooling, the problem may be deeper. A failing compressor or low refrigerant level are both situations that require a licensed appliance technician. You'll often hear a compressor struggling — it may run constantly, make a clicking noise as it tries to start, or stay completely silent when it should be running.
Refrigerant leaks are less common in sealed systems but do happen over time, especially in older units.
