Why Your Oven Burns Food on One Side

You pull out a sheet of cookies and half of them are dark brown while the other half looks barely done. Or your roast chicken comes out charred on the left side and undercooked on the right. It's frustrating, and it's one of the most common complaints we hear from homeowners. The good news is that this problem almost always has a fixable cause — and it's usually not the oven itself that needs to be replaced.

The Most Common Culprit: A Failing Heating Element

In electric ovens, the bake element sits at the bottom of the oven cavity, and the broil element runs along the top. When one section of the bake element starts to fail, it stops generating heat evenly across its full length. The side closest to the working portion gets much hotter, and food near that side burns while the rest lags behind.

You can actually see this happening if you watch closely during preheating. A healthy bake element glows red evenly from end to end. If one section stays dark or glows dimly compared to the rest, that element is on its way out.
