The diode's job is to convert the electrical current into the high-voltage DC power that the magnetron needs to operate. When it burns out, the magnetron gets nothing useful to work with, so it simply doesn't fire. The microwave keeps running — the fan, the light, the turntable — because those components draw power from a completely separate circuit. Everything else works fine. Nothing heats.

A failed diode often has a visible burn mark or a crack if you inspect it closely, but not always. Testing it with a multimeter is the most reliable method. A functioning diode will show continuity in one direction only. If it shows continuity in both directions, or none at all, it's done.
