When Your Microwave Starts Making Strange Sounds

Most people don't think twice about a microwave until it starts acting up. You press start, and instead of the usual low hum, you hear rattling, buzzing, grinding, or a loud mechanical sound that wasn't there before. The immediate question is always the same — is it still safe to use? The honest answer depends entirely on what type of noise you're hearing and where it's coming from.

Not All Microwave Noises Mean the Same Thing

This is where a lot of homeowners go wrong — they either ignore the noise completely or panic and assume the appliance is about to catch fire. Neither reaction is always right. Different sounds point to very different problems, and knowing the difference can save you money and keep your kitchen safe.

Humming or Low Buzzing

A steady, low hum during operation is completely normal. Every microwave produces this sound because of how the magnetron works — it's the component that actually generates the microwave energy. If the hum is consistent and stops when the cycle ends, there's nothing to worry about.

However, if the humming is louder than usual or continues after the microwave stops running, that's a different story. In many homes, we see this happen when the magnetron is starting to fail or when the diode — a small but critical component — is burning out. A failing diode often produces a loud, almost painful buzzing sound. At that point, the unit should not be used until it's inspected.

Grinding or Rattling Noises

A grinding sound usually points to the turntable motor or the turntable ring underneath the glass plate. Sometimes it's as simple as food debris stuck in the roller guide. We've seen kitchens where someone microwaved something that boiled over, forgot to clean the bottom, and three weeks later the hardened residue was causing the plate to scrape with every rotation.

Before calling anyone, remove the turntable, clean the ring and the cavity floor thoroughly, and test again. If the grinding continues with the turntable removed entirely, the motor itself may need replacing — which is a repair job, not a DIY fix for most people.

Popping or Arcing Sounds

This one is serious. A sharp popping sound — especially if you see flashes of light inside the cavity — means something is arcing. This usually happens when metal accidentally makes it inside, when the interior paint or coating is chipped, or when the waveguide cover (the small flat panel on the interior wall) is damaged or coated in grease.

Stop using the microwave immediately if this is happening. Arcing can damage the magnetron quickly and in rare cases create a fire hazard. The waveguide cover is inexpensive and easy to replace, but the interior should be inspected before you continue using the unit.

A Real Situation Worth Knowing About

A homeowner once described a microwave that started making a loud rattling every time it ran. She assumed it was just loose screws on the exterior and ignored it for months. When a technician eventually looked at it, the cooling fan blade had cracked and was hitting the fan housing with every spin.
