Your Appliances Are Probably Costing You More Than They Should

Start With the Refrigerator — It Never Turns Off

Your refrigerator runs 24 hours a day, which makes it one of the highest energy consumers in the house. One thing we see constantly in homes is a refrigerator set way too cold. The ideal temperature for the fridge is between 35 and 38 degrees Fahrenheit, and the freezer should be at zero degrees. Anything colder than that is just burning electricity for no reason.

Another overlooked issue is the door seal. If the rubber gasket around the door is cracked or loose, cold air leaks out and the compressor has to work harder to compensate. A simple test: close the door on a dollar bill. If you can pull it out without resistance, the seal needs replacing. It's an inexpensive fix that can make a noticeable difference on your monthly bill.

Also, leave space around the back and sides of the unit. Refrigerators release heat through their coils, and when they're pushed tight against a wall or cabinet, that heat gets trapped and the motor runs longer than it should.

Washing Machines and Dryers: Where Hot Water Gets Expensive

Heating water is one of the biggest energy draws in any home. When it comes to laundry, switching from hot to cold water for most loads can cut the energy used per cycle by up to 90 percent. Modern detergents are designed to work effectively in cold water, so there's really no good reason to use hot for everyday loads.

On the dryer side, the most common mistake we see is running partial loads. A dryer uses roughly the same amount of energy whether it's half full or completely full. Waiting until you have a full load — without overstuffing it — is one of the easiest ways to reduce how many cycles you run each week.

Cleaning the lint trap before every single load isn't just a fire safety issue. A clogged trap forces the dryer to work harder and run longer to dry the same amount of clothes. In many homes, we also see the dryer vent hose kinked or partially blocked behind the unit. That alone can add 20 to 30 minutes to a drying cycle.

Dishwashers, Ovens, and the Small Stuff That Adds Up

Many people assume dishwashers use more water and energy than hand washing. In reality, a full load in an efficient dishwasher uses less hot water than most people use at the sink. The key is running it only when it's full and using the air-dry setting instead of heated dry. That one setting change can reduce the dishwasher's energy use by around 15 percent.

With ovens, preheating longer than necessary is a habit that wastes energy. Most ovens reach temperature in 10 to 15 minutes. There's rarely a reason to preheat for 30 minutes. Also, every time you open the oven door during cooking, the temperature drops by 25 degrees or more — the oven then has to burn more energy to recover. Use the oven light and window instead.
