The Most Common Culprit: Frost Buildup on the Evaporator Coils
Inside your freezer walls, behind a panel, sit the evaporator coils. These coils get cold and absorb heat from the air inside. Over time, frost naturally builds up on them — which is why refrigerators have an automatic defrost cycle that runs every 6 to 12 hours to melt that frost away.
When the defrost system fails — whether it's the defrost heater, the defrost thermostat, or the defrost timer — frost accumulates until it completely blocks airflow across the coils.
