Before you call a technician and face a potentially expensive repair bill, there are several things you can check yourself. Many causes of an AC blowing warm air are surprisingly simple to fix, while others do require professional attention. Here is a practical breakdown of what to look for and what to do.
Check the Thermostat First
This might sound obvious, but the thermostat is the most common culprit for warm air coming from an AC system. Check that the thermostat is set to "Cool" and not "Heat" or "Fan Only." When it is set to "Fan Only," the system circulates air without actually cooling it, which can easily feel like warm air on a hot day.
Also make sure the temperature setting is lower than the current indoor temperature. If the thermostat is set to 78°F and your home is already 75°F, the system simply will not kick on. Lower the set temperature by at least 5 degrees and wait a few minutes to see if cool air starts flowing.
Check Your Air Filter
A dirty or clogged air filter is one of the leading causes of poor AC performance in American homes. When the filter is blocked with dust and debris, airflow is severely restricted. This forces the system to work harder and can cause the evaporator coil to freeze over, which results in warm or no air coming through the vents.

Check If the Fan Is Running
With the system running, go outside and listen. The condenser fan on top of the unit should be spinning. If it is not, the unit may have overheated and tripped a safety switch, or the fan motor may have failed. A tripped breaker is worth checking before assuming motor failure.
Look at Your Circuit Breaker
Air conditioning systems often use two separate breakers, one for the indoor air handler and one for the outdoor condenser.
