Why Your AC Keeps Cycling On and Off

If your air conditioner is turning on, running for two or three minutes, shutting off, and then starting right back up again — that's not normal operation. That pattern is called short cycling, and it's one of the more common complaints we hear from homeowners during summer. It's also one of the more misunderstood ones. A lot of people assume the AC is just working harder because of the heat outside. In reality, short cycling is a sign that something is wrong, and leaving it alone can wear out your compressor faster than almost anything else.

What Short Cycling Actually Means

A properly functioning central AC should run in cycles of around 15 to 20 minutes, two or three times per hour. When that cycle gets cut down to five minutes or less — especially if it keeps repeating — your system is failing to complete its job. It's turning off before the refrigerant has done a full circuit, before the air handler has properly conditioned the space, and before your home has actually reached the target temperature.

The result is poor cooling, higher energy bills, and serious mechanical strain. The compressor, which is the heart of your outdoor unit, takes the biggest hit. Every startup puts stress on it. When it's starting up every few minutes instead of every 20, you're burning through its lifespan quickly.

The Most Common Causes

Dirty or Clogged Air Filter

This is the first thing we check, and honestly, it's the cause more often than people expect. A clogged filter restricts airflow so severely that the system overheats and trips a safety shutoff. The AC kicks back on a few minutes later, only to overheat again. In many homes, we see filters that haven't been changed in six months or more — sometimes completely gray and packed with debris. A fresh filter costs a few dollars and takes two minutes to swap out. It's always worth ruling this out first.

Refrigerant Leak or Low Charge

Low refrigerant is a frequent culprit that gets overlooked because it's invisible. When refrigerant levels drop due to a leak, the system loses its ability to absorb heat properly. The evaporator coil can actually freeze over, and when that happens, the unit trips its safety switch and shuts down. A few minutes later, once the pressure equalizes, it tries again. This cycle repeats endlessly. The fix isn't just topping off the refrigerant — a licensed technician needs to find and repair the leak first.

Oversized AC Unit

Here's something a lot of homeowners don't realize: a unit that's too large for your home will cool the space so quickly that it shuts off before it's had a chance to properly dehumidify the air. The room feels cooler but stays clammy, and the system keeps cycling in short bursts. We often see this in homes where the AC was replaced without a proper load calculation. Bigger isn't better — the right size is what matters.

Thermostat Problems

A faulty thermostat, or one that's placed in direct sunlight or near a heat source, can send incorrect temperature readings to the system. The AC thinks the home has already cooled down and cuts the cycle short. Replacing or relocating the thermostat is sometimes all it takes.

Electrical or Capacitor Issues

A failing capacitor — the component that helps the compressor and fan motors start — can cause the unit to shut down unexpectedly after just a minute or two of operation. This is a common repair in systems that are five years or older, especially after the system has sat unused through winter.
