There's nothing more frustrating than hearing your air conditioner running nonstop while you're still sweating inside. You'd expect a system that's been running for hours to eventually get the house comfortable — but it just doesn't happen. The Most Likely Culprits Behind the Problem
A Dirty or Clogged Air Filter
This is the number one thing people overlook. A clogged air filter restricts airflow so badly that the system can't move enough cool air through your home. We've walked into houses where the filter hadn't been changed in six months or more — it looked like a solid gray brick. The AC was running constantly because it was starving for airflow. Swap the filter first. It takes two minutes and costs almost nothing. If the filter is dirty, this might be your entire problem.
Low Refrigerant Levels
Refrigerant is what actually removes heat from the air inside your home. If your system has a leak and refrigerant levels drop, the AC loses its ability to cool effectively. It'll keep running, but it won't be transferring heat the way it should. You might also notice ice forming on the refrigerant lines near the indoor unit. Low refrigerant isn't a DIY fix — a licensed technician needs to locate the leak, repair it, and recharge the system properly.
A Dirty or Frozen Evaporator Coil
The evaporator coil sits inside your air handler and is responsible for absorbing heat from your indoor air. When it gets coated in dust or freezes over, heat transfer slows dramatically. A frozen coil will sometimes thaw on its own if you run the system in fan-only mode for a few hours, but a dirty coil needs professional cleaning.
Condenser Unit Blocked or Overworked
The outdoor unit — your condenser — dumps the heat your AC pulls out of the house. If it's surrounded by shrubs, caked with dirt, or sitting in direct sun without airflow, it can't release heat efficiently.
