When Your AC Is Running But the Air Just Trickles Out

There's nothing more frustrating than a hot afternoon when your AC is humming along but the air coming out of the vents feels more like a gentle sigh than a strong, cool blast. The system is on, the thermostat is set, and yet certain rooms still feel stuffy and uncomfortable. This is one of the most common calls we get during the summer months, and the good news is that most of the causes are completely fixable — some even without a service call.

Start With the Obvious: Your Air Filter

If there's one thing that causes more airflow problems than anything else, it's a clogged air filter. A standard 1-inch filter that hasn't been changed in three or four months can become so packed with dust, pet hair, and debris that it essentially chokes the entire system. When air can't get through the filter freely, the blower has to work harder just to pull air in, and the output through your vents drops noticeably.

We see this constantly in homes with pets or in dustier climates. One homeowner called convinced her blower motor had failed — turned out the filter was so clogged it had actually collapsed inward and was partially blocking the return air opening. A new five-dollar filter and the system was back to normal within minutes.

Check your filter first. If it's gray, stiff, or you can't see light through it when you hold it up, replace it immediately. During peak cooling season, some homes need a new filter every 30 days.

Blocked or Closed Vents Throughout the House

This sounds simple, but it gets overlooked more than you'd expect. Furniture pushed against floor vents, curtains draped over registers, or supply vents that have been manually closed in unused rooms — all of these restrict airflow and create pressure imbalances in your duct system. When some vents are blocked, the air has nowhere to go, and the rooms you actually want cooled end up with poor circulation.

Walk through every room and make sure all supply and return vents are fully open and unobstructed. Even in rooms you don't use often, it's generally better to keep vents at least partially open to allow the system to breathe properly.

Leaky or Damaged Ductwork

In many homes, we find that a significant portion of cooled air never makes it to the living space at all. It leaks out through gaps, disconnected joints, or holes in the ductwork — often in unconditioned spaces like attics or crawl spaces where that air is completely wasted. A duct system losing 20 to 30 percent of its airflow is not unusual in older homes.

Signs of leaky ducts include some rooms being significantly warmer than others, higher than normal energy bills, and vents in certain areas blowing noticeably harder than vents further from the air handler. A professional duct inspection and sealing can make a dramatic difference in both comfort and efficiency.

A Failing Blower Motor or Dirty Blower Wheel

The blower is the component that actually pushes air through your entire duct system. When the blower motor starts to wear out or runs at reduced capacity, the airflow across every vent in the house drops. Similarly, the blower wheel — the fan component itself — can accumulate a thick layer of dust and grime over the years. Even a quarter-inch of buildup on the blades dramatically reduces how much air it can move.

This is something a technician typically catches during a seasonal AC tune-up, which is another reason annual maintenance matters. A dirty blower wheel can sometimes be cleaned during a service visit rather than replaced, saving you real money.
