Why Your Washing Machine Shakes Violently
Your washing machine is supposed to spin smoothly, not sound like it's about to walk across the laundry room. When a washer starts shaking violently, it's telling you something is wrong—and the sooner you figure out what, the better. A machine in distress won't fix itself, and ignoring the problem often leads to expensive damage down the road.

Unbalanced Loads Are the Most Common Culprit
In many homes, we see excessive shaking caused by something simple: clothes bunched up on one side of the drum. This happens more often than you'd think, especially with large items like comforters, heavy jeans, or wet towels that clump together during the cycle.
When weight distributes unevenly, the drum has to compensate by spinning faster to balance itself out. The machine rocks, vibrates, and can create a rhythmic banging sound that makes you think something serious is failing. Here's the thing—it's usually just an imbalance.
To check this, pause the cycle mid-wash and redistribute the load manually. Separate heavy items from lighter ones. A good rule of thumb is filling the drum about three-quarters full and mixing fabric weights. If the shaking stops after rebalancing, you've solved it.
Foreign Objects Stuck Between the Drum and Tub
This is where things get more concerning. Small items like coins, buttons, underwire from bras, or pieces of broken zippers can fall between the outer tub and the inner drum. During the spin cycle, these objects get caught and create a grinding, rattling sensation—sometimes accompanied by violent shaking.
A real example: I once found three coins, a bobby pin, and part of a zipper slider lodged in a customer's machine. The shaking was so bad they thought the drum was failing. Twenty minutes and a tub removal later, the problem was solved.

Worn Drum Bearings and Suspension Problems
When a washing machine is older or has logged thousands of cycles, the drum bearings wear down. The bearing is what allows the drum to spin smoothly. When it fails, friction increases dramatically, and you'll feel intense vibration and hear grinding or squealing sounds.
Suspension springs and dampers also wear out over time. These components keep the drum centered and absorb movement during the spin cycle. Worn-out suspension parts mean the drum can bang against the tub, creating violent shaking that worsens with each load.
If your machine is over 7 or 8 years old and shaking severely, bearing failure is likely. Unfortunately, this isn't a quick fix—it requires replacing internal components, which is usually expensive enough that some people opt for a new machine instead.
Shipping Bolts Left Behind
This one catches people off guard. New washing machines have transport bolts installed to lock the drum in place during shipping. These bolts must be removed before the machine is used. If they're left in, the drum can't spin freely, and the machine will shake violently as it tries to operate.
Check your installation manual. If you recently bought a used machine or had one installed, verify those bolts were removed from the back of the unit.
Pump or Motor Issues
A failing pump or worn motor bearings can also trigger shaking. The pump drains water, and if it's damaged, it creates imbalance during operation. Motor problems typically show up as vibration that gets worse during specific cycle stages.

What You Should Do Right Now
Start with the simple stuff. Check for unbalanced loads and redistribute. Look inside the drum and around the rubber seal for visible objects. Quick action checklist: Stop the current cycle and redistribute the load evenly across the drum. Check for small objects caught between the drum and tub by inspecting the rubber gasket and drain area. Make sure the machine is level on the floor using a spirit level and adjust feet if needed. If shaking continues, don't run more loads—call a technician to diagnose bearing, suspension, or pump issues. Document when the shaking started and what cycle it happens during to help the repair person.
